Meeting Minutes

CHAPTER 70 DINNER MEETING and Annual General Meeting

Held at

CARLINGWOOD RESTAURANT

           

6:45 pm – 9:30 pm

 Tuesday November 19, 2013

 

At 6:45 PM, Vice-President Richard Ferch VE3KI welcomed 25 Chapter members, and introduced the head table.

1)     Annual Message from the president as presented by Richard Ferch, VE3KI:

 


General Comments of appreciation

 

·                    Richard thanked the volunteers and Executive for their dedication and hard work for QCWA Chapter 70.  Thank Doug for running our Web site, Marcel for handling the certificates, John Barnhardt for being our photographer.

·                    Richard thanked  outgoing executive members Bob MacKenzie as Past President and Dick Bonnycastle as Treasurer

·                    Richard thanked the on-going good work of the 2 metre net and encouraged members to check-in on VE3MPC, Monday evenings at 7:30 pm.  Jim Dean, VE3IQ and other net controllers will be extremely happy to hear from you. 

·                    Richard thanked the guest speakers and their contributions for 2012/13; these were:

 

·                                         Wayne Getchell, VE3CZO: RF Analogue Design from Concept to First Prototype

·        John Barnhardt VE3ZOV: The Great Waterfront Trail Adventure  

·        Dave Goodwin, VE3AAQ: Amateur Radio Experiences in China and the Pacific.

·        Frank Stratton, VE3YY: Modern Trailer Communication

 

Richard reminded members to seek out eligible amateurs and invite them to join the Chapter.

 

2) Minutes of the September, 2013 dinner meeting: - Richard VE3KI asked for approval of the minutes as posted on the Chapter 70 website.

 

        Moved by Norm, VE3LC and seconded by George VE3BNO, that the minutes be adopted as posted. Carried.

3)   Membership Policy Richard VE3KI reviewed the draft which had been distributed with the meeting notice and posted on the web site. Doug VE3XK moved that the Membership Policy as posted on the web site be approved. Seconded by Jim, VE3IQ.  Carried.

4)      Secretary’s Report:  Report from Norm Rashleigh VE3LC. Norm mentioned the Chapter’s response to the Industry Canada consultation on proposed revisions to the Table of Frequency Allocations and the possibility of an amateur allocation at 472-479 kHz. Norm also talked about the opposing response to IC by the Power Utilities folks and their concern amateur operations on band could cause interference to PLC systems controlling the workings of the Power Grid.  Moved by Norm and seconded by Dave, VE3AV that the report be accepted. Carried.

5)      Treasurer’s report and proposed Budget (2014) – The Treasurer’s report was presented by Dick VE3FUA. The financial numbers and budget are presented at the end of these minutes. Dick reported that donations for 2013 were $250 to Radio Amateurs of Canada and $250 (US) to the QCWA scholarship fund.  Moved by Dave, VE3AV and seconded by Bob, VA3RKM that the Treasurer’s report be approved.  Carried

6)      Illness and SK Report: - Richard Ferch VE3KI, reported on sick and ailing members and silent keys as follows:

Ed Morgan, VE3GX, charter member of Chapter 70, passed away on November 1. Richard asked for a moment of silence and reflection for Ed.

Dave Conn, VE3KL, is at home recovering from the flu.

Some members may know David Hilborn, VE3JBX, who is in long-term care. Norm has contact information if anyone wishes to visit or send a card.

 

7)      Equipment sale: Bob Mackenzie VA3RKM reported on the results of the sale of equipment that Ron Powers VE3FIN had gifted to Chapter 70.

 

8)      Nominating Report: Bob Mackenzie, VA3RKM, presented the slate of candidates willing to stand for new executive positions.

We are still outstanding a Vice President and another Director.
                
There were no nominations from the floor.
 

Moved by Bob, VA3RKM and seconded by Dick, VE3FUA to elect the new executive members as proposed. Carried.

                

Doug VE3XK has agreed to continue for another year as the Web master and archivist for the chapter and Marcel Lemay VE3FNG has agreed to continue with the pins/certificates.

 

            
9)            After Dinner Speaker:
 

We had planned to have Clayton Smith, VE3IRR as the speaker for the evening on the subject of Software Defined Radio (SDR) using open source GNU software building blocks.  Clayton had a death in the family and couldn’t attend.  Instead, Doug VE3XK stepped in already having prepared a talk on a similar topic for West Carleton ARC and was happy to present it to us too. Doug’s talk was about: Adding a Panoramic Display to his TS 2000 using inexpensive SDR technology and integrating it with CW Skimmer.

Thanks Doug, it was a good presentation.

 

10)    Door prizes and 50-50 draw: Richard VE3KI, assisted by Doug, VE3XK, conducted the selection of winning tickets for the door prizes and 50/50 draw.  The winner of the 50/50 draw was Jim VA3KV

 

Next meeting: - Before closing, Richard VE3KI announced that the next luncheon meeting will be held on Tuesday February 19, 2013. It will be held at noon hour, commencing at 11:15 am. Speaker and venue to be determined.   Norm has a 45 minute DVD on the Kiritimati (T32C) 2011 DXpedition if we decide not to have a guest speaker this time.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm.
