Above Subject: The BC-348 0.5-18 MHz HF Receiver was the 28V-powered version of the 14V-powered BC-224A. Introduced in 1936, it was installed in almost all US, some Canadian and British heavy aircraft such as B-17, B-24, B-25, B-26, B-29, C-46, and C-47 during World War II and up to the Korean War. Initially it was paired with 30-75W transmitter BC-375, which was later replaced by the 100W ART-13. The BC-348E (and BC-224E) had an added 200-500 kHz band.

Photo 13

Above Subject: T1154 HF Transmitter paired with (usually) two R1155 HF Receivers, as used in RAF and RCAF Halifax and Lancaster heavy bombers from 1941-1950. The combination provided CW, MCW and AM communication from 75 kHz-18.5 MHz. A companion rotatable loop antenna provided direction-finding capability. Colour-coding was intended to simplify operation in a darkened aircraft interior.

Photo 14

Above Subject: Secret radio built from stolen or fabricated parts by RAF/RCAF prisoners of war in a German camp and concealed from the guards in a secret compartment carved into the bunk-bed frame.

Photo 15

Above Subject: The  Four-Rotor Enigma encryption machine used by German forces during World War II, replaced the earlier Three-Rotor version which had been "broken". A massive radio interception operation by the allies copied most of the radio-telegraph traffic encrypted on machines like this. These signals were eventually "broken" by the first digital computers at Bletchley Park in England

Above Subject: Portable 6-9 MHz 0.3W Wireless Set #58 developed in Canada in 1942 for short-range radio-telephone communications in forward areas and widely used by Canadian forces. Range was 3 miles with a 6 ft rod antenna, 5 miles with a 12 ft rod, 4 miles with a telescopic aerial and 2 miles with a 25 ft ground aerial. Weight was 14.5 lb plus 15.5 lb for backpack with batteries and accessories.

Photo 19

Above Subject: Wireless Set #11 0.6-4.5W HF Transceiver was introduced in 1938 and was a mainstay of tank communications up to 5 miles in the early part of WWII.

Photo 20

Above Subject: Wireless Set #18 Battalion and Company man-pack radio, introduced by Pye in 1940, and later built by a number of subcontractors, was widely used by all services in WWII. Receiver is on top and transmitter below in the photograph.

Photo 21

Above Subject: Wireless Set #19 shown (lower right) together with 100W amplifier (above), introduced in 1942. Developed by Pye Radio in England for use in tanks and similar applications, the WS#19 was also built in Canada by Northern Electric, RCA Victor and Canadian Marconi. To meet Lend-Lease requirements, many front panels carried English/Russian lettering. The "A set" covered 2-8 MHz in AM and CW, and the "B set" covered 230-240 MHz - speech only. An intercommunication amplifier provided voice communication between crew members.

The Larkspur family (C42, C45, B45, B47, B48, and A13) were designed and produced by Plessey in England to a specification from the UK Signals Research & Development Establishment in the mid-1950's. It remained in service with UK and Commonwealth militaries into the 1980s, to be replaced by the Clansman family.

Above Subject: RUP12 Man-Pack radio built in Yugoslavia around 1970. The fully solid-state unit has a power from 0.9 to 1.8W (FM). Frequency coverage is 30 to 69.95 MHz, synthesized in 50 kHz steps.
Units show were probably "liberated" during the Bosnia Peacekeeping Mission around 1991.

Photo 32

Above Subject: PRC-638 is a VHF FM Man-Pack radio built by IRET in Italy in mid-1980s. Frequency range 30-76 mHz, synthesized in 25 kHz steps. Output power is 4W/300mW. It was never used by the Italian army but was used by the Iraqi army during Operation Desert Storm - 1990/1991.
